Ingleton rests in the foothills of one of the famous Three Peaks of Yorkshire, the Ingleborough. It’s known for its naturally-forming caves and great mountain scenery.

The village is hemmed in alluring limestone countryside, which has magnificent waterfalls, deep caves, and unique geological and archaeological sites. The first trail was opened in April 1885, and in June 1888, about 3840 visitors flocked to Ingleton in just one day. The natural features are a crowd-puller for climbers, walkers, potholers, and cavers.

Walking, Climbing, and Hiking

Ingleton offers a perfect base for climbing the peaks of Whernside and Ingleborough. Going up Ingleborough from Ingleton through Crina Bottom Farm is the most popular route for visitors. The Whernside mountain walk, starting from Ingleton, is pretty impressive and it can be accessed by tracks leading from Kingsdale and the waterfalls.

Walking along the Whernside track offers you a breath-taking view over Ingleborough and Gragareth in the east and west, respectively. The Ingleton Waterfalls Trail features some of the most magnificent woodland scenery and waterfalls. Hiking on this trail leads you through the unique geological features and ancient oak woodland vegetation.

Caving, Cycling, and Biking

Ingleton is dotted with numerous caves including the White Scar Cave, which is touted as the longest show cave in Britain. This hidden world was sculpted by nature over a period of thousands of years. You can also explore the Gaping Gill, which is among the largest underground chambers in Britain.

Ingleton hosts exhilarating biking and cycling trails. Every year, a cyclo-cross event is hosted at the 3 Peaks on the last weekend of September. This is one of the world’s most difficult cyclo-cross races. In essence, there is just so much to do in Ingleton whether it’s rock climbing, canoeing, cycling, caving, orienteering, or abseiling.
